Habanero chillies originate from the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, and take their name from Habana (Havana) in Cuba, where the chillies were traded extensively.

Habanero chillies were until recently considered to be the hottest chillies in the world with a Scoville rating of approximately 300,000 units – until the Naga Jolokia was discovered that is.
